View map Free Event Add to calendarJavier Jara and his team of collaborators have created a very special event entitled, “Our Rhythms, Our Voices,” highlighting and exploring the diverse cultures and heritage of Latin American immigrants living in Texas. Over the past couple of years and with the support of grants from the City of Austin and The Institute for Diversity and Civic Life’s Migration Narrative project in conjunction with the Henry Luce Foundation, the team has interviewed and photographed twelve immigrants and created songs from those interviews using a rhythm from each person’s homeland. The primary focus of the event will include a folk concert of the songs written about each Latin American interview subject followed by a question and answer session with the audience whereby the presenters will discuss the oral history project and the cultural origins of the different rhythms used in the songs. In the lobby of the venue, the team will place a series of panels displaying photographs of the people interviewed along with significant quotations taken from the interviews. At the heart of the project is the idea that music plays an integral role in transmitting the culture, history, and narratives of a particular region.
